THE U.S. CAPITOL MASSACRE: THE RESPONSIBILITY OF WHITE LIBERALS AND OTHER SELF-PROCLAIMED DEMOCRATS AND THE SELF-CENTERED UPPER-MIDDLE CLASS.

Melia Jannotta

White liberals and many members of the American upper-middle-class have blood in their hands. They share a great deal of responsibility before, during, and after the insurrection of January 6th by radicalized white terrorists supported and incited by President Trump.

Today, many liberals who remained silent during other demonstrations, such as the summer of 2020, or even before there was a pandemic affecting the entire globe, have spoken up. These White liberals, especially upper-middle-class individuals, have been watching people of color (POC) being killed for years and always on the sidelines, not interested in coming out nor support the struggle of POC. This lack of concern and cowardly behavior by self-proclaimed white defenders of a fairer and brighter future comes from a position of privilege. An attitude proper of an individualistic and selfish society, but why the lack of empathy and support?

White America remained silent for most of the Trump regime because they felt protected and untouched by an authoritarian government's evil actions. They were not under attack; their children were not put in cages, their friends were not prohibited from entering the country for being Muslim, their nephews were not denied living wages, their friends were not hunting down beaten on the streets for being brown or black. Most troubling, the selfish white liberal and the American upper-middle-class chose to remain silent because they took their freedom for granted. In their privileged minds, and before January 6th, nobody was coming after them. However, all changed on a cold Wednesday in the streets of Washington D.C., when a trained group of homegrown terrorists commanded an already angry and radicalized mob into the U.S. Capitol.

Before January 6th, white liberals and upper-middle-class “democrats” urged counter-protesters not to engage, arguing that by closing our eyes and covering our ears, neo-fascist, white supremacy, and the far-extremist groups would magically go away. These parsimonious beliefs have been their position for years, a way of thinking conveying fear, shame, and guilt.

White America surrendered to their fear and avoided confronting the reality of a crumbling democracy. Historically, White America has shown not interested in supporting others' struggles in need, especially POC. For example, some White Americans were afraid of being associated with social movements, such as Black Lives Matter; perhaps they were fearful of upsetting other white upper-middle-class families and friends.

White America has projected their shame and guilt towards POC for generations, especially when their comfort level and privilege are questioned. Let us be real; for some White Americans, racial justice is just fashionable. They have gotten accustomed to living shielded from the horrors of racial discrimination. They have distanced themselves too often, taking a vile position and watching everything from an individualistic and selfish attitude. Yes, friends, the white liberal is corrupt and cannot be trusted.

It seems that many white “liberals” have found their voice in recent days, along with some moderate and less conservative republicans. Furthermore, our newly vocal “white allies” want all to unite with them. Well, it is hard for POC to accept this sudden call for solidarity, and here is why: those who now claim to be “white allies” and want us all to be together act this way because, for the first time in years, they have felt under attack. This time, the Trump regime came for them, for their children, for their friends, for their democracy.

Today, white liberals and the American upper-middle-class present themselves as defenders of democracy, but friends, let us be real; they are not in the fight for us; they are in it for themselves. White liberals have blood in their hand, and even though we might use their “fire” to help the resistance, we know where they are coming from, white folks! We see through you.

History has shown that white liberals and their upper-middle-class mixed-race partners would remain prejudiced, self-centered, and subsume in their privileged life of indifference, always pretending to care for racial justice but never ready to fight side by side with underrepresented communities.
